Jefe del gobierno militar chileno (
1974–90). Oficial militar de carrera, planeó y encabezó el golpe de Estado en que murió el pdte.
Salvador Allende. Inmediatamente se lanzó a aplastar la oposición liberal y en los tres años siguientes arrestó a cerca de 130.000 chilenos y extranjeros, muchos de los cuales fueron torturados y algunos de ellos asesinados. Lideró una rápida transición a la economía de libre mercado que frenó la inflación, pero que puso en duros aprietos a las clases bajas. Una nueva constitución en 1981 le concedió ocho años más como presidente. Fue rechazado en el plebiscito de 1988, y se realizaron elecciones libres (1989) que llevaron a Patricio Aylwin a la presidencia en 1990. En 1998 se le arrestó en Inglaterra por solicitud de España y se le retuvo para llevarlo a juicio por crímenes contra ciudadanos españoles en Chile durante su mandato; fue liberado 16 meses después. Luego fue acusado en Chile por la muerte de disidentes, pero se le declaró mentalmente incapacitado para el juicio.
